Landforms Geography Note

Landforms

Landforms are the natural features that make up the earth’s surface.
There are many landforms that we can differentiate from. The main landforms are as follows:

2 Examples
1)    Mountains
A natural elevation of the earth’s surface rising more or less abruptly to a summit and attaining an altitude greater than that of a hill usually greater than 600m.
Mount Everest – Nepal
Rocky Mountains (Western Canada) & Appalachian Mountains (Eastern Canada)
2)    Shields
The base rock of an ancient mountain region that has been worn away leaving a flat rocky landform region
Canadian Shield – Canada
Australian Shield - Australia
3)    Valleys
An area of low land between areas of higher land.
Death Valley, Grand Canyon – USA
Fraser River Valley- Canada
4)    Plains
A large flat to gently rolling region
Great Plains of Western Canada
5)    Plateaus
a high flat region that has been lifted up by the movement of the earth’s surface.
