Plate Tectonics
Ways that Plates move to build
Mountains:
1) Divergent Plate Boundaries – a place where two plates of the
lithosphere move away from one another (eg. The Mid- Atlantic Ridge)
2) Transform Plate Boundaries (Slip & Slide) – a place where
side by side plates grind or slip and slide past one another. This often causes
an earthquake to occur. (eg. San Andrea’s Fault in San Francisco, California)
3) Convergent Plate Boundaries – a place where two plates of the
lithosphere come together and push against one another. (eg. Pacific Plate colliding with the North
and South American plate to form the Western Cordilleran Mountains – Rockies
& Andes)
